SpeediCath Compact Set®

During this project, our partner, Technolution, has contributed not only to the final solution, but has also introduced new methods of development to us that will increase the efficiency of our mechanical development team in future.

Case

SpeediCath Compact Set® is a part of Coloplast’s compact series of catheters designed to be easy to carry, and with a discreet non-drug appearance for users with bladder disorders. SpeediCath Compact Set® is different because has a bag mounted on the catheter, which collects the urine during use. This is ideal for users with chronic bladder disorders.

Technolution

The user’s expectations set high demands on creativity, thus for the development of SpeediCath Compact Set®, Coloplast was in need of specialists who were creative and imaginative within concept development and could be part of an interdisciplinary cooperation with marketing, design and production at Coloplast. Furthermore, the Technolution-specialists were to be experienced in the development of mechanical systems in plastics and injection molding and have advanced skills in 3D CAD drawing documentation.

In cooperation with Coloplast, Technolution undertook the product’s verification phase including Design of Experiments (DoE) to all critical features of the product. The product parts were to be optimized for foundry processes and assembly process (Design For Manufacture – DFM). The catheter is applied to a friction-reducing coating that must be kept moist. Therefore, it is important that the product is sealed and sterile because the catheter is to be inserted into the body.

Solution

With Technolution as partner, Coloplast developed SpeediCath Compact Set®, which was introduced on the marked from 3rd quarter 2012.

With Technolutions extensive experience from other projects, a simpler design was made possible. Technolution introduced a concept proposal with seals of flexible material to make the product easier to use

Technolution contributed to the finish and verification of the design.
Technolution completed the detailed design of the components with robust 3D CAD parties and extensive drawing documentation. In cooperation with Coloplast, a completely new setup and new procedure for drawing documentation was introduced, including GPS aim and alignment, as well as parameter array for use during verification and validation of mold tools. In close cooperation with Coloplast Six Sigma specialist, Technolution planned and implemented Design of Experiments (DoE) test setup, which verified that the product was robust.
